Water Law Associate Attorney

Salary:                        $110,000 – $150,000 (based on credentials and experience) plus bonuses and benefits

Location:                     Bakersfield, California

Education:                   Juris Doctor and license to practice in California

Experience:                 Minimum two years litigation experience, four years preferred

Young Wooldridge, LLP is one of the top law firms in Bakersfield, and its Water Law and Special Districts department is one of the premier agricultural water law practices in California. We are seeking an associate to work primarily in the areas of water resources litigation, public law, and environmental law.

Qualifications and Skills Required

  • Litigation. Ability to manage a case from filing to trial—including pleading, discovery, motion practice, and trial preparation—is required. Some trial experience is preferred.
  • Public Agency Law. Familiarity with California public agency law—including Brown Act, Public Records Act, CEQA, and Political Reform Act—is desirable but not required.
  • Attention to Detail. Strong attention to detail and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently and accurately, are required.
  • Communication. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
  • Team Player. Proven ability to work as part of a team, including taking and giving constructive criticism, is required.
  • Technology. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Acrobat is required. Proficiency with Westlaw, Deadline Assistant, Everlaw, and ShareFile is preferred.
  • Resourcefulness. Willingness and ability to learn, solve problems, and adapt is vital.

Duties and Areas of Responsibility

  • Case Management. Take responsibility for a selection of active cases, including making all routine appearances, conducting discovery, working on motions, and preparing for trial.
  • Research and Strategy. Assist senior litigators with complex legal and factual research and formulating case strategy.
  • Court Filings. Prepare and review pleadings, discovery, motions, and briefs.
  • Public Records Act and eDiscovery Review. Supervise and assist with document review for responses to eDiscovery and Public Records Act requests.
  • Public Agency Law. Assist as needed with transactional and board practice for wide range of public agency clients, primarily water agencies.
